Yeovil Camera Club

Chairman's News -Winter 2006

By now the summer programme is but a faint memory, although by all accounts a very pleasant and enjoyable one thanks to Keith efforts.

The new season is well under way with a full weekly programme and external competitive events. The reports of all meetings up to the end of November are included in summary form at the end of this letter and if the general response is positive I will continue to include them in future.

The results of all competitions, both internal and external, are also provided and selected pictures from the internal ones appear in the gallery section. This is a new feature, which I hope will prove both a popular and sustainable feature of our club's image to the outside world.

This season we have already mounted (no pun intended!) four exhibitions or displays.

  • The Montacute Church Flower Festival in August displayed over 60 of our prints.
  • Stoke-sub-Hamdon United Reform Church Art Show in late September accepted 70 prints. The offering from our "Seasoned Exhibitors" (AKA "The usual suspects") was enhanced by the work of more recent members, some of whom consider themselves novices. All were greatly admired.
  • Yeovil Library provided support for our general promotional and awareness efforts. Richard  masterminded the display to show what we are about. There were further new contributors and although constraints on space made the final representative selection a tricky one, it did us proud.
  • West Coker Village Committee held, in November, an open show evening of local activities, mounted in response to local residents requests. Our simple display gave a thumb nail sketch of the club and showed four prints from each of four members who could respond rapidly since the whole thing was put together in three days. A real "Blue Peter" job!! None of us could attend because it was held on a Monday. However, on the night Nick "Held the Fort" in between doing his own bit for the village!

Other news and comments

The Isle of Portland Heritage Trust Photographic Exhibition and Competition is no "Dog and Pony Show". Entries are attracted from all over the country and the judges are of International Salon standing. Amongst 548 entries our senior "usual suspect", Cyril, at 85 years old, won the Humour section with his delightful children's study titled "A Gentleman Never Looks".

This was the 22nd year of this event and really should be on everybody's "To Visit" list.

The Octagon Theatre Exhibition is getting close and display entries should be with Richard by January 8th .The Exhibition runs from 18th of January to 13th of February. Mount size must be 20" x 16" whilst the picture size is the author´s our own choice.

The WCPF Digitally Projected Image Competition is to be held at the end of February and entries should be in, to our Competition Secretary, by January 5th. For selection on artistic grounds, entries can be submitted as Prints, Slides or Jpeg files and the committee will conversion of the chosen images to the projection format required for the competition.

We are a club of members with a wide diversity of interests, both in photography and other activities. I mention just one because of the link involved. Jonathon's Highly Commended "Vintage Norton" print is featured in the Gallery but how many know that he also wins "Thinking Man´s" quizzes and reviews Motorcycling Books? (The Visitor December 2000)

I trust that you all have a very Happy Christmas and keep in mind the February Competition "Still Life" I guess that there will be plenty of it around over Christmas!!

Good shooting
Tony
